How to Sponsor a Poker Run

My first motorcycle was a 1943 Flat Head Harley Davidson. When I found the bike for sale I had no money, but I knew I wanted this dream machine. I wasn't making enough money to pay for it so I needed a plan. I came up with a way to raise money and throw a great party at the same time. I organized a Poker Run. I made enough money to buy the Harley, had a few bucks left over and had allot of fun along the way.

The Poker Run was originally an event bikers played out on their Harley, but over the years it has been borrowed by Boaters, Runners, Bicyclist and I'm sure by others as well. The concept of a Poker Run is to travel a course or route and while doing so pick up poker cards along the way. Each person makes a 5 card poker hand from the cards they collect with the best hand winning money or prize. The way this is carried out for bikers is, each biker travels the planed route, every few miles there is a checkpoint at which each biker must stop and pickup a poker card. There are 7 checkpoints with the 7th checkpoint being at the final destination. Once all riders have reached the end, the rider with the best 5 card poker hand wins a grand prize. There can be variations to the prize scheme but the idea is to award cash or merchandise prizes at the end.

Sponsoring a poker run is fairly simple but takes time and some not so hard work. The first thing you need to do is plan the travel route and positioning of the check points. The route should be laid out so that the last check point is at the final destination. This is where the Poker Run party will be held. In order to do this you may need to get approval from the cities you plan to travel your poker run through, there may be some paperwork and fees for this. Always check with the city municipalities to ensure compliance with local laws.

At the end of the run is a park or event facility, somewhere where a biker crowd can hang their hat for a few hours. Depending on where you live you may need a permit (especially if alcohol will be served) for the park. Of course you will need permission for any kind of event hall or facility you plan to use.

Next you need to do a little financial planning. By figuring out how much you will use for prize money and how much the party after the Poker Run will cost, you can calculate how many riders you'll need and what the entrance fee will be. Keep in mind entrance fees should be less then 0 per bike, charge too much and the turn out will be poor. A word of caution here, be sure you do a good job of knowing the total cost of the event. Poor math can quickly turn a profit into a loss.

The next thing you will need to do is register riders. The best way to do this is to make a website where registration can be made and money can be collected. This of course may be more than you want to do so the old fashion method of mail-in or phone-in registration will work just as well. Along with registering riders for your poker run, you should also sell tickets to friends and others that just may simply want to attend the party after the ride is over. A scheme where a certain cost for the bike and it's rider and another much lower cost for a passenger is a good approach.

To advertise, leave flyers and posters at biker bars, biker events and motorcycle shops in your area. If you are looking for a big crowd, run an ad on a local Radio Station, this will cost you some up front money but you can get the message to allot of people. Also if you're into the internet thing, you can run a Banner Ad advertisement on relevant websites. Keep in mind your marketing efforts should be localized, most bikers are only looking for a day event and will not travel far for a poker run.

Finally, careful planning of the party can be made once you have a good idea of the number of participants. If your party is small you can either buy your own food and enlist your friends and associates to help, or you can hire local catering services to handle it all. Some thought should be given to the kind of activities you may want to have during the party as well. Oh and make sure you plan to have a prize award ceremony that charms the crowd. Don't be cheap here, bikers won't let you get away with that! If beer is being served and or provided, special care and planning should be taken to preserve life and limb.

It wasn't cheap food, but it wasn't a place you needed to dress up for. When a new item was introduced to the menu, the servers had to learn the ingredients, how things were cooked, basically the same information as the kitchen staff. That way, if a customer ever asked a question about it, we could answer. Sometimes just asking the server is enough. If you are a regular, and have been known to tip well, if there is something the server isn't sure of, you can bet they will go into the kitchen and try to find out the information you are looking for. In fact, some cooks and chefs are so flattered that you appreciate their good food, they will come out themselves and you can easily get pieces of information out of them.

If you are the quiet type, and asking these questions seems a little bit too difficult, you can still figure out a lot by looking at your dinner. Most menus will list ingredients, especially now with all the allergies people have. Write them down. Sneak out your cell phone when your dinner comes, and take a picture. Then, dissect your food. Sure it may take away some of the pleasure for that sitting, but you can look really find out a lot just by taking a deeper look at what is on your plate.

To get you started, here is the recipe for Claim Jumper Thai Cole Slaw!

Ingredients:
1/2 head Napa cabbage, thinly sliced
1/2 zucchini, julienned
2 jumbo carrots, julienned
2 green onions, sliced
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
3 tablespoons shaved coconut
3 tablespoons roasted unsalted peanuts
2 tablespoons toasted almonds

Thai Slaw Dressing:
8 ounces Thai sweet chili sauce
8 ounces orange juice
1/2 ounce honey
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, chopped fine
1/2 teaspoon light brown sugar
1 teaspoon cilantro, chopped fine
1 tablespoon sesame oil

Instructions for salad: Combine the cabbage, zucchini, carrots, sesame seeds , onions, coconut, peanuts and the almonds in large mixing bowl. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Instructions for Thai dressing: Place ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk them all together. Slowly add the sesame oil while you continue to whisk. Pour desired amount, about 1/4 cup, over chilled salad. Enjoy!

Uncooked Candy Recipes

BALTIMORE LAYER CANDY
5 whites of eggs
21/2 tablespoonfuls cream
1 teaspoonful lemon extract
1 teaspoonful rose extract
1 square melted chocolate
1 teaspoonful almond extract
6 tablespoonfuls chopped almonds
1 teaspoonful vanilla extract
1/4 lb. (1 cup) chopped coconut
1/2 teaspoonful orange extract
1 orange, grated rind and strained juice
Sifted confectioners' sugar
Few drops green color
Few drops red color
Few drops orange color

Food Chopper

Beat up one white of egg, add the lemon extract, one teaspoonful of the cream, the coconut, and mix with sufficient confectioners' sugar to make stiff enough to knead thoroughly. Then spread evenly in the bottom of a pan lined with waxed paper.

The other four layers are made in the same way, except that the color and flavor of each are different. Thus the second layer is colored with a few drops of red and flavored with rose extract; the third is mixed with vanilla and chocolate; the fourth with green color and almond extract, while the fifth is prepared with orange color, orange extract, and the rind and juice of an orange.

Spread evenly one above the other and let remain in the pan for two days, then turn out on a board sifted with confectioners' sugar, and allow to stand three days before slicing.

Wrap each piece in waxed paper and keep in airtight tins.

CHERRY CREAMS
8 ozs. (1 cup) confectioners' sugar Flavors
Pinch cream of tartar
Crystallized cherries Cream
Colors

Sift the sugar into a basin, add the cream of tartar and enough cream to make a stiff paste; flavor with orange and lemon extracts to taste, and divide into five portions; leave one portion white, and color the remaining portions pink, rose, pale green and brown; roll out each piece to one-eighth of an inch thick, dip a small plain cutter into confectioners' sugar and cut into rounds.

As each one is cut place a cherry in the center; fold up three sides so that the fruit is exposed in the center, but partly covered. Place in little paper cases.

CHOCOLATE FRUIT BARS
2 ozs. (1/2 cup) stoned dates
2 ozs. (1/2 cup) pine nuts
2 ozs. (1/2 cup) seedless raisins
1 teaspoonful vanilla extract
1 white of egg
1 oz. (1/4 cup) currants
A little melted chocolate
2 tablespoonfuls water
1 ozs. (1/2 cup) chopped candied citron peel
2 ozs. (1/2 cup) chopped candied lemon and orange peel
Confectioners' sugar

Chop all the fruits and nuts very fine, or run them through a food-chopper.

Put the white of egg into a basin, add the water, vanilla, fruits, and enough sifted confectioners' sugar to form a stiff paste.

Let the mixture dry for four hours.

Brush it over with melted chocolate. When dry, turn the sweet over on to waxed paper, and brush over the other side with melted chocolate.

Allow to set, then cut into neat bars with a sharp knife.

COCONUT KISSES
Desiccated coconut
1 white of egg
1/4 lb (1 cup) ground almonds
1 teaspoonful almond extract
1/4 lb. (1 cup) sugar
Color

Mix the almonds, sugar, almond extract, and white of egg to a stiff paste.

Leave aside until next day before molding.

Divide and color one half, and make into balls, and roll in desiccated coconut. Press the coconut well in and roll in coconut again.

Leave to dry for a few hours on waxed paper. Put in paper cases.
