The 3-cup workbowl is convenient for many prep tasks and the exclusive SmartPower Blade auto-reverses to chop or grind at your command. Unlike larger models, this machine takes up very little counterspace, so leave it out to help you with daily meal prep like chopping onions, making garden fresh salsas and more. This little 250-watt workhorse comes in handy when a full-size food processor is unnecessary. The 3-cup work bowl is just right for making pesto or a salad dressing, and two receptacles in the lid have pinholes for one or two oils to stream into the bowl while the processor is blending a perfect emulsion. It's also ideal for chopping and grinding. Pressing the "chop" button deploys the sharp edge of Cuisinart's patented reversible blade to chop onions, herbs, or bread crumbs. Pressing the "grind" button whirls the blade in the other direction so its blunt side can grind nuts, coffee beans, or cheese. Compact at just 9 inches high and lightweight (it has a plastic body), the Mini Prep Plus can be tucked away in a cabinet, and the little spatula accompanying it goes into a drawer. It carries an 18-month warranty against defects. The plastic work bowl and lid are dishwasher-safe, but the stainless-steel blade should be hand washed to protect its edges. --Fred Brack

Food Processors Vs Food Choppers - Totally Different Uses

Many a time's food choppers are compared with processors. But each of these appliances has their own distinctive features that make them suitable for usage in various types of cookery tasks. Normally, the usage of a food chopper or processor is decided by considering the food that is to be cooked.

Food Chopper

Food Choppers:

Food Chopper

Food choppers are basically small sized kitchen appliances that are used to cut food items. Food choppers are normally available in two types of configurations. First we can find the manually operated choppers that have sharp blades that chop the food with an up-down motion. Then we have the electric chopper that cuts the food with a rotating motion of the blades. The small size of a food chopper makes it handier for regular usage as compared to processors.

Tasks Performed by Food Choppers:

Food choppers are mostly useful for chopping different fruits and vegetables such that they can be used for various salads and desserts or in the form of an ingredient for different food recipes. Normally these choppers do not provide any additional processing options. The only option they provide is an on and off switch. The amount of chopping to be done is totally dependent on the person using the food chopper.

Food Processors:

Food are among the most versatile kitchen appliances that are available in the market. They can perform many different tasks by using the multiple varieties of attachments and blades that come along with the food processors. The capacity of processors is quite large as compared to any other similar type of device. Food processors normally use a large bowl made of plastic that are covered by lockable lids. These bowls allow the users to see through so that they can get a clear view of the process.

Tasks Performed by Food Processors:

Food processors are highly versatile and are used for various tasks like dicing, shredding or slicing any kind of food items including meat. They are also used for creating dough for baking.

Storage Space and Cleaning:

All the parts of the food processor that can be washed including the blades and bowls should be washed comprehensively using hot water. Because of the large size of a processor, storing the processor can be troublesome as compared to processors.

  • Prehistoric Man

Today man is the ruling animal on our planet. Our ancestors were ape-like animals living in trees. Scientists have pieced together our history with great care from fossils bones preserved in rocks which have given an idea of what our ancestors looked like. Remains of their tools and weapons are clues to the way they lived. There are still many puzzles, but new discoveries are being made to add to the story.

    Food Chopper

Scientists think that a small ape-like creature called Ramapithecus could have been our ancestor. This animal lived in forests between 14 and 6 million years ago, and at night probably slept in the safety of the branches of trees and only climbed down to ground level during the day. Much of the time they scuttled about on all fours, but sometimes may have stood on their hind legs, perhaps when stretching to grasp food from young fruit trees. From this developed one of the main differences between us and other animals, the fact that we walk on two legs rather than four. Scientists believe Ramapithecus is our ancestor from the shape of it's jaw and teeth which were more like a human than an ape.

    Food Chopper

Around 14 million years ago there also lived another ape-like creature named Dryopithecus which scientists think may have been the ancestor of today's ape. Living in Africa about 3 million years ago were several kinds of man-apes called hominids, this name comes from the word homo, meaning man. One sort of hominid was Australopithecus and there were several kinds. The tallest grew no more than around 1.5 meters and their brain was only half the size of ours, but they could walk on their two feet. They ate plants and fruit and probably birds eggs when they had the chance to steal them.

Living at the same time was another hominid called Homo, it had a bigger brain than Australopithecus and scientists believe it was a direct ancestor of man. Homo was a meat eater where small groups hunted slow moving, sick or young animals. They may have used stones and thick branches to kill them. Very slowly over millions of years the hominids developed and changed, and remains have been dug up in East Africa that have found traces of tool making ancestors of ours. Scientists have named them Homo habilis, meaning handy man, which is thought to be an early member of the bigger group known as Homo erectus.

Homo habilis is the first of our ancestors that is known to make and use tools. They were simple stone choppers and sharp stone fragments, where making tools of this type led to the science and technology of today, and they also made the first shelters. These were made of twigs and branches, using stones and rocks to support them, which would have given greater protection from the weather and fierce animals when sleeping at night. And as a matter of interest because they didn't know how to make fire, meat was ripped apart and eaten raw.

There are few remains to show how homo erectus gradually developed, but we know that by about 250,000 years ago, a new type of people lived, and these were Homo sapians, meaning wise man, and this is the group to which we also belong, and there were several types of Homo sapians.

The Neanderthal people were a heavy and stocky type with strong muscles and sloping foreheads, and lived mainly in Europe at the time of the last ice age. They must have been tough because during this time, much of Europe was covered in ice and snow all of the time.

The first fully modern people of Europe appeared about 40,000 years ago, and these early people are called Cro-Magnon, after the place in France where their remains were first found. Scientists are not sure what happened to the Neanderthals, it may have been because the Cro-Magnons had better tools and weapons and traveled in larger groups, being able to kill them off, or it could have been that they could not adopt to the warmer weather as the ice age ended.

As well as being good hunters and artists the Cro-Magnon people had many other skills. They made needles from splinters of reindeer antlers which they used to sew together animals skins for clothing, and they didn't have cotton thread like we use today, but used strips of leather or gut. The Cro-Magnons loved jewelry, making beads, bracelets and pendants out of many things, like pebbles, shells and fish bones, we know this because often they were buried with them when they died.

It has taken much careful study to put together ideas about the development of early man, and new discoveries often mean changes in these ideas, so nothing can be taken for granted. And as a whole civilization living on this planet, mankind has progressed with the knowledge and technology that we know today and is rapidly increasing, and who knows what we may evolve into in the distant future, for look how far we have come already.

    Birthday Party Games Treasure Hunt

    The Birthday Treasure Hunt...

    Food Chopper

Make a Birthday (or any reason for a gift) into a fun time for all……

    Food Chopper

First the short, simple version:- Put a clue in a Birthday card that leads to another clue, then another clue, until eventually they find the gift..just like a real treasure hunt.
For the finer points ..read on…

For many years I have not GIVEN Birthday or Christmas presents to my children, instead they receive their Celebration card and in the card is a simple clue written on a piece of paper. (Depending on the age and ability of the birthday child would depend on the clue they receive).

The general idea is to play treasure hunt on whatever scale you feel the recipient can manage...E.g. Young children from 4 to 10 would probably be restricted to the house and garden. Teenagers may like to travel to local malls or shops..for adults unless you have a rocket to play with ..the world is big enough!!

    This Idea works like this.

Get a piece of paper and a marker pen and think of areas where you could put a clue that will direct them to another clue....e.g.. Clue--- “Where does Buzz light year go when the play room is tidy?” The answer is "the toy box" When they figure that out, tell them there is another clue in the toy box. They now go to the toy box and find a clue (may be fixed to Buzz Lightyear) it could say "where do you store your bike??" The answer could well be the shed or garage...so the child goes to the shed or where ever the bike is stored and there, fixed to the bike, is another clue.

The Treasure hunter will enjoy this much more than just getting the present given to them. Try it yourself( do a dummy run with your partner and see what fun it is).I suggest making the treasure hunter work a bit, so why not put the first clue down stairs and the second one up stairs and then the third one in the garage..think of two places a long way from each other then watch and enjoy as your treasure hunter runs around the place looking for the next clue!

After four of 5 clues (or more if you like, sometimes a clue could send them to the fridge for an Ice cream..then they find a clue fixed to the ice cream!). They eventually find the present that you may have hidden in a draw or under the settee.
Some clues can be tricky so you may have to give hints or tips. This could take the form of the game “charades” where you can give a clue, but you can’t speak, you only give signs.

Writing the clue is especially suited to personal family jokes or Information i.e. Clue:- “This is where the item that Granny broke last Christmas used to be”....may be she broke the vase on the fireplace, so they go to the fireplace where the vase used to be and find a clue there. (for an adult version, I guess you could hide the clues about your person! I shall say no more on that!!)

There are many variations on this simple Idea, for example... for teenagers this can be made into your major party game. Your clues could suggest they go to a few local shops or places of interest. The way that works is to select the places you think would be good to visit (may be you know the shopkeeper or assistant there) and deposit a clue in a brightly coloured envelope with the shopkeeper or assistant at each place. When preparing for the treasure hunt, just go to the selected place and explain you have a treasure hunt for a party game and would they mind if the their establishment was a place for a clue to be kept? (I find giving the assistant a few bucks as a tip is a good way to get it two work smoothly).
If the assistant agrees check they know what your treasure hunter looks like and give them a password that the treasure hunter must say before they receive the clue envelope. Tell them an approximate time (and day) that your treasure hunter should arrive. When the treasure hunter arrives they ask for the password (which was on the previous clue), if it is correct handover the clue. Once, in a candy shop, I pre paid for six packets of candy, this way, when my lad and his mates came in, they got a packet of candy as well as the clue...

As for the clues themselves write them in big letters on a sheet of A4 or A5 as you may have quite a few people in the treasure hunt party all wanting to read the same clue. The bigger and brighter the envelope you put the clue in , the better! (I tend to keep all the envelopes the same size and colour, this helps with continuity and is an assurance they are getting the correct envelope). You can make the treasure hunters work out the location of the next clue with a word game. An anogram of GOD has the clue under their food bowl…

You can really put some work in and bury a clue in a box or a bag, may be in the garden or even a public place like a beach or under some stones in a park. The places to hide the clues are endless..as the envelope has no value as such they should not be stolen if you hide them well.

How do they get around?/ they could all be on their bikes or you can say you will be the driver..that way you can enjoy the fun, they get to be the back seat driver and keep you can an eye on them all.

    Have fun

    From a Happy Dad

This fun family idea is brought to you by Owen Winter

Eating Organic - Why and How to Start

Why Eat Organic? The question should be, why not? I have been eating organic food for about three years now though I do cheat on occasion. I chose to switch after reading two books. The first was by Kevin Trudeau and the second by Jordan Rubin. Many of you have seen Trudeau on television promoting his books and may see him simply as a businessperson trying to make money. There are many skeptics who think that his Natural Cures book is a sham. I'm not going to lie when I state that I was slightly frustrated that the book was more of a reference tool. The book itself made me want to eat healthier but it referred to Internet websites and other books to answer many of my questions. I was discouraged when I visited Trudeau's website to find that I would need to become a member to receive more information. I'm sure this is a great system for Trudeau to make millions and this might make him seem unreliable, not to mention, he certainly doesn't have a background in health care. One thing I can say about Trudeau is that the concept of eating healthy and staying healthy simply by eating an organic version of all the food I eat now certainly sparked my interest. I was also pleased with the fact that he wasn't afraid to tell the general public why the government benefits from offering us trash food like McDonald's and Burger King. I was certainly convinced that eating organic was the way to go when I read Jordan Rubin's story. He was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and cured himself after many unsuccessful bouts of hospital visits in and out of the U.S.

    Food Chopper

I decided to put what I learned to good use and started shopping at the neighborhood "health food store". I dropped those extra pounds like nothing once I switched to organic food, mind you; this was after many months of diet attempts. There were times when I would just have salads only and the weight just seemed impossible to get rid of! What I didn't know when I was gobbling down my salads is the fact that I was also gobbling down pesticides.

    Food Chopper

Plenty of people are aware that there are pesticides found in much of the produce at the grocery store but we don't hear about anyone getting sick or dying from it, so we eat it. What some people do not know (like myself at the time) is that when you consume foods like these, the toxins in your stomach start to build up and prevent your body from releasing waste, in turn making us gain unnecessary weight. I was beginning to cleanse my body and began to feel better than ever. I was happy that I was at my normal weight again and I noticed that once this weight was achieved, I stopped losing. I can maintain my weight even when I splurge on organic chocolate or other treats because they're not stuffed with chemicals.

I tried to convince people to get onboard the organic wagon many times and was slightly unsuccessful. I continue to try to convince my mom but it isn't taking. There is a huge misconception out there that organic food is like rabbit food but this is completely false! I'm on my way to convincing my best friend, but her husband is not interested and dinnertime can be a challenge when you need to make two separate meals. It can sometimes be difficult as a guest at someone's home when they notice that you are eating very little food. Some may choose to poke fun at you simply because they don't understand. For example I've attended gatherings where a friend or family member will say something like, "We made this food for the party, but you can't eat it because only eat organic". Sometimes I feel like a rebel when all I've been doing is making healthy food choices for my family and myself. I have officially decided to just keep it to myself for the most part, but no one can stop me from sharing my discovery with a general audience. I don't intend to preach to anyone about what they should or shouldn't do because I have been known to stray occasionally. My point is to let you know that you can look and feel great by simply switching to organic food and I want to spread the word because the differences I've seen in myself are so remarkable I hope that everyone can have the same experience.

I am no longer "lactose intolerant". I couldn't even look at a piece of cheese or glass of milk three years ago without getting sick and wasn't interested in taking over-priced Lactaid pills every day to enjoy the foods I love. I basically stopped eating cheese and drinking milk- not a great idea. These stomachaches did not just happen when I consumed these products. I was a teacher working with children of special needs and was under a decent amount of stress so I attributed this as the reason for having an upset stomach every single day. It would start right after lunch and would last for at least a half hour, if not, for the whole afternoon. I would have an upset stomach when traveling because I was paranoid that my everyday stomachache would come back and I'd be trapped in the car or even worse- public transportation. The stomachaches got worse and I skipped many meals just to avoid being sick for the rest of the day. Little did I realize all I had to do is eat food that wasn't toxic and eat more of it!

Even though I still looked decent, I noticed that certain things just weren't the same. My nails were thin and brittle. My chin was constantly breaking out. My hair started to thin and my doctor tested me for malnourishment. The doctor said I need to eat more and take Lactaid and she fluffed me off with a bag full of sample packets of fiber and calcium supplements and sent me on my way. Thinking back now, I find it a little funny that the supplements contained propylene glycol, an agent used to clean antifreeze off the floors of garages.

After many stomachaches, new diets and much research, I finally switched to raw organic cheese and fresh raw milk found at a farm in Massachusetts and my lactose nightmare was over. Raw milk and cheese contain the necessary live enzymes needed to help our stomach break down lactose and digest easier. Pasteurization and homogenization destroy these live enzymes along with most of the vitamins. Why drink milk and eat cheese when they practically have no benefit to your health because they've been stripped of everything that makes them good in the first place? Not to mention, wash it down with some Lactaid and water as well as a few unwanted chemicals I'm sure? My nails and skin became much healthier as a result of drinking raw milk and I can now enjoy both milk and cheese without the agonizing pain that would normally follow.

Many people think that raw milk is dangerous. I did plenty of research before deciding to drink it and even more research before I gave it to my daughter. It is safe when you buy the raw milk from a local farm that is certified organic because the milk is constantly tested for bacteria counts and the farm receives many unscheduled visits for random testing. The farm is not allowed to sell the milk if the bacteria count is above a certain level and will lose their license until it meets the appropriate standards. The cows are fed hay and alfalfa during the winter and roam freely through the pastures. They are stress free and are not forced to eat corn that takes a toll on their system- even with four stomachs!

Raw milk and cheese coupled with organic food has changed my health for the better. I also drink Goji berry juice for extended health benefits as well as Noni juice on occasion. They each cost about .99 per bottle so I drink them when I can and alternate between the two simply to maintain my budget. Speaking of budgeting, you're probably wondering how in the world I manage healthy eating with the economy the way it is while practically living paycheck to paycheck. First and foremost, I admitted to myself that I would probably need to make a few sacrifices here and there to free up part of my budget for more expensive food. What I realized down the road is that I was actually spending around the same amount of money, slightly more on occasion. Why? Because when you eat organic, you eat less since the food actually makes you full. I made it my part-time job to visit as many stores in my area as possible to take a tally of what foods and drinks they carry and compared the prices. I found which stores carry the foods I eat on a regular basis and which stores I would visit on occasion for items like Goji and Noni juice. Even though it didn't take as much of a toll on my pocketbook as I expected, we all still need to cut corners and find the best bargains for our hard-earned money.

Eating organic and saving money can go hand-in-hand if you do it right and make it important enough to dedicate some time to each week. I may not have a foolproof method, but for now, I shop at a wide variety of stores at different times depending on what I want to buy. I have officially freed myself from the over-priced neighborhood "health food store". It was convenient to get everything I need in one place, but it was costing me an arm and a leg. I may shop at one or four of these stores on the weekend: Trader Joe's, Price Chopper, Stop & Shop, Market Basket, a local fish market, a small nutrition store in the next town and a local co-op. I stopped shopping at Shaw's once I bought my third item of expired organic food. The only thing I travel for is my raw organic milk and it's worth every mile for milk that tastes just like thinned vanilla ice cream!

I'm going to leave you with a list of some of the items I buy, from where, and an idea of what each cost so you can see that it is possible to eat healthy on a budget- as long as you don't mind doing a little extra work and of course a little cooking! Keep this in mind when you are the one trying to convince someone to switch to organic and they think it's ridiculous. Give them this example, If you were at work and you had a splitting headache that was making you sick but had no medicine and your coworker offered you a new over-the-counter pain reliever and told you it works better than any other, would you question them, or would you say thank you and take the pill? Why wouldn't you question a chemical that is about to enter your body yet you will question why you should eat pure food?

    Here's my list:

    Local Fish Market, "Mekong":

    Haddock (Not farm-raised!) .99/lb.
    Salmon (Not farm-raised!) .99/lb.

Grocery stores are running out of fresh fish and are turning to unhealthy farm-raised fish, not to mention fresh wild-caught fish from your local fish market is cheaper!

Local Food Co-Op: (This store is approximately 12' by 12'. It is a little treasure that I would never know about without doing research online. Everything listed here is organic. This is great for folks who have very little money to spend because you can volunteer your time and work there to receive discounts on your purchases! Most items are in bins so you bring your own bags and weigh them.):

    Black beans
    Kidney Beans
    Pinto Beans
    (Basically, any beans)
Split Peas (All organic legumes run from $.99-1.75/lb.)
    Rolled Oats about .00/lb.
Hazelnut chocolate bar I can't find anywhere else! .99
Celtic sea salt about .50 will fill a saltshaker (This is a huge savings!)

The Nutrition Source: (This is another little treasure that I discovered in the town next door and they are very similar to the most popular nutrition store in the city at about half the cost. They also throw in free samples when they get new products. This is priceless- literally. You must find a store like this.)

I buy my organic legumes, oatmeal and sea salt here when I don't go to the co-op because they are close to the same price but have a smaller selection with pre-made bags.

Raw organic honey small jar .99

Organic spinach pasta about .49 per box

    Organic raisins about .50/lb

Goji berry juice 1 liter usually .99 but has been on sale at .99 for months (This never happens anywhere else.)

Noni juice 1 liter about .99 per bottle (The Goji and Noni will last 2-4 weeks)

Organic coconut oil about .99 for a jar that will last 1 month

Natural hair gel about .99 for a bottle that lasts my husband 1 month

Jason's natural whitening toothpaste about .99

I need to be careful in this little store because I can easily drop 0.00 simply because of the deals and fun new items. Don't forget stay focused when shopping!

Misty Brook Farm: (This one's the doozie. This is where I don't cut corners and spend the most amount of money on a consistent basis. I travel 45 minutes away to this nearest farm to purchase my delicious raw organic milk. The farm offers a meat as well as a limited variety of products according to season but every one is 100% fresh and most are organic.)

One 1/2 Gallon raw organic milk in the canning jar (Almost straight from the cow!) .50 plus deposit (I usually buy four but it's never enough. Read more about the benefits of raw "organic" milk and believe me everything good you read is true.)

Organic Potatoes .99/lb. Straight from the ground!

Organic free range chicken and duck eggs .00/dozen

Meat is very expensive but delicious and the cleanest meat in the market.

Trader Joe's: (This place is tricky because very few of the products that read organic are 80% organic or more. They could just be 50% or more and this leaves room for 1/2 of the product to contain junk.):

Stoneyfield Farm Yogurt large container is .00 cheaper than at the grocery store

    Organic Bananas 3/.00

    Organic apples .99/5 lb. Bag

    Organic oranges .99/ 5lb. bag

Hummus about .00 cheaper than the grocery store

    Organic russet/red potatoes .99/bag

Organic cereal .00-2.00 cheaper than grocery store

Organic pasta sauce .00 cheaper than grocery store

Eggs .99/dozen (Average price but better "grocery store" eggs)

Organic Fruit strips for snacks $.49 ea.

Natural oatmeal/almond soap- huge bar .99

Tip: Don't buy the bread because it is extremely dry.

    Here's the easy part:

I shop at the grocery stores for pretty much everything else because it is convenient. You really must be careful not to stray when you're at the grocery store and you want to be sure that you're not buying something that is "natural" because it means nothing. I usually purchase products that normally have a long shelf life from the grocery store. Products that need to be fresh like fish, eggs and milk need to be purchased elsewhere.

Do research online and look up organic food to find stores local to you. Do some window-shopping for the items you purchase the most and find the best places to shop to stock up on necessities. Get great recipes on line as well. Certainly check out Jordan Rubin's website and his books to have an understanding of how much you can change your life by eating organic food. Read about the benefits of organic coconut oil, Goji and Noni juice and raw milk.

You will realize that there is very little you need to change. You'll most likely just be buying a healthier version of the foods you already eat and may discover a few new things that you like. If you look hard enough, you'll find that there is and organic version of almost everything out there. Making the switch can be as simple as beginning to buy only organic foods at your grocery store until you get the urge to explore even more. Enjoy!

Equipping the Homestead - Homesteading Supplies for the Kitchen

If you're just getting started building a homestead, there are some homesteading supplies for the kitchen you may want to put on your list. Just like in any kitchen, plates, bowls, glasses, cutlery, a knife set et al are still going to be used. But there are some additional items that are used in the process of cooking and food storage that you will find valuable. Some of the items you may already have and use, and some you may not.

    Food Chopper

For cooking and baking, having non electric hand tools will be invaluable in the event of power outage. Some hand tools for your list are a can opener, hand beater (think egg beater), grain mill (useful for coffee as well as grains), manual meat grinder, juicer, rolling pin, grater, potato masher, strainer, wire whisk, non-electric yogurt maker, bread toaster, knife sharpener, potato peeler, nut chopper, garlic press, and a flour sifter. This is not an inclusive list, but will get you started.

    Food Chopper

Having the ability to prepare and cook your own food under any circumstances is invaluable. Containers for cooking that will last and be usable with or without electricity would include, but not be limited to, cast iron pots and pans, a dutch oven, a solar oven, a stock pot, crockery or enamel ware, stainless steel and ceramic bowls, a roasting pan, cooling racks, broiler pan, cast iron teapot, and a stove top coffee percolator.

Preserving the food you have, especially from your own garden, is a critical element to homesteading and one for which there are more homesteading supplies needed. One way to preserve food is to dehydrate it. A good electric dehydrator will help you preserve a lot of food fairly quickly, but it would also be wise to have a non electric dehydration method just in case. Canning is another excellent way to preserve the bounty of your garden. There are two basic method for canning, water bath and pressure. A pressure cooker/canner is an essential element to canning and is necessary for low acid foods and meats. If you had to only have one way to can, pressure canning would be it since you are able to can all kinds of food in a pressure canner.

A water bath canner is also good, it is inexpensive and useful, just cannot be used for all types of canning. Aside from a pressure canner and a water bath canner additional canning supplies include jars, lids, jar top funnels, cooling racks, jar tongs, and a pressure gauge.

As mentioned, it is entirely possible that you already have some of these items, but making yourself a shopping list would be a good step to fully equipping your homestead kitchen.

9 Fun Ways to Stretch Your Bird Feeding Dollar

Have you seen the price of black oil sunflower seeds?! In our neck of the woods the cost has more than doubled since last year. The climate extremes this past year combined with the high cost of fuel have led to this problem.

    Food Chopper

So I have listed 9 ways you can stretch your precious bird seed dollar and still feed the birds nutritiously. These are fun supplementary foods that can be offered on a seed tray or any flat feeder surface.

    Food Chopper

    1. Chicken scratch--very inexpensive blend of wheat, oats, rye, etc. (available at farm supply stores, or online).

    2. Regular grass seed bought in bulk (untreated, please--rye is their favorite).

    3. Dog food (yup, dog food!) Woodpeckers love it! And so do lots of other birds. Buy in bulk to save even more money.

    4. Fruit and vegetable seeds that have been dried (save the seeds, especially sweet peppers, when you prepare fresh salads; or carve a pumpkin or roast an acorn squash, etc.) *See below for my drying method.

    5. Save your bacon drippings, or other meat juices and mix with bread cubes.

    6. Buy generic peanut butter and/or jelly, then slather on pine cones you have gathered. Hint: mix them together before spreading them on the pine cones.

Or use the jelly, bacon drippings and/or peanut butter for spreading on day-old bakery items purchased at the discount grocery or bakery outlet near you. All feeder birds adore these wonderful occasional treats.

    7. Whole fruits like apples or pears, cut into small pieces. By the way, birds don't care if the fruit is bruised. Check with your local grocery store--if you ask them, they may save bruised fruit and veggies for you; do make sure that it hasn't spoiled, though.

    8. Nuts like acorns, almonds, pecans, walnuts, brazil nuts, hazel nuts, pistachios, cashews, hickory nuts, butternuts, etc. that have been collected from your own or neighborhood trees (if you are lucky enough to have them nearby), or bought in bulk from the discount store.

Since it is one of those mindless jobs that can easily be done while sitting in front of the tv, with my nutcracker in hand and 2 big bowls I crack the nuts over one large bowl where the shells will go, and use the other bowl for the actual nutmeats. If you have a hand chopper, you can also chop the shelled nuts into medium-sized pieces that will make your backyard birds very happy!

    9. Popcorn! A large bag of pre-popped popcorn will extend your bird feeding budget. The alternative is to buy the largest bag of popping corn at the discount or grocery store. If you have a microwave air popcorn popper, even better! Birds love popped corn and any unpopped kernels will surely be eaten as well.

*Here's how to save and easily dry seeds from your own fruits and veggies, like apples, pears, peppers and pumpkins:

If you eat fresh produce, it is easy to dry the seeds from peppers, apples, melons, squash, pumpkins, etc. (Remove the seeds before cooking or baking any of the produce.) Lay a piece of waxed paper or freezer paper out flat in a dry place that will be undisturbed for about a week. Place your seeds in a single layer on top of the waxed paper. I allow at least a week for the seeds to become thoroughly dry. If they are not totally dry, they will mold and spoil.

Once you determine that your veggie or fruit seeds are absolutely dry, remove them from the paper and place in an air-tight jar in the fridge until you are ready to treat your feathered friends. You can repeat this process every time you have fruit or vegetable seeds available if you wish. That way you will have a ready supply for your birds.

Considering growing your own vegetables next season? Then you may wish to save some extra seeds for planting in your own garden. The drying process is the same. After they have thoroughly dried, just store them in a sealed glass jar in the fridge. Be sure to label them so you'll know exactly what you will be planting. By the way, this works best with organic vegetables. They will not have been hybridized, so your new crop will be exactly like the original produce. You can then gather and save your own free 'heirloom seeds' from what you have grown each season!

Incidentally, I use a canning jar with a separate inner seal and screw-on ring. I divide my seeds using tiny envelopes from the stationery store, or ones I have made myself using waxed paper or freezer paper. Remember, moisture is your enemy when it comes to saving seeds.

Growing your own produce is an extra bonus for you and your birds!

Using any or all of these supplemental foods can make a real difference in your bird seed budget. Black oil sunflower seed is less expensive than the grey-striped sunflower seeds here. But that may not be the case where you live. The larger grey-striped seeds are just what the grosbeaks, cardinals and other large-beaked birds love. While the black oil sunflower seed works well for all feeder birds no matter how big or small their beaks might be. So buy the least expensive sunflower seed choice that is available for you.

I would stay away from the generic mixed seeds as they contain a lot of waste. It will just end up on the ground under your feeders, uneaten. The largest bag of just sunflower seeds is still your best bet.

Have fun with these supplemental bird feeding choices for your own beautiful birds. Your backyard will be the most popular for miles around!

    World of Warcraft Activities

Have you just started playing World of Warcraft but don't know exactly what to do? Here are some of the most common activities in WoW to get into which will keep you busy playing for hours.

    Food Chopper

    Create Your Character
In World of Warcraft, there are 2 Factions you can choose from: Alliance and Horde. Different races exists in both factions. In Alliance you can create a Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome or Draenei. In Horde you can create an Orc, Troll, Tauren, Undead, Blood Elf. Both factions offer the same classes. You can either be a Warrior, Rogue, Hunter, Warlock, Mage, Priest, Shaman, Druid, Paladin or Death Knight.

    Food Chopper

    Level Up Your Character
The main thing to do in World of Warcraft is to do level up your character. The easiest way to do this is to do the Quests provided to you by various Quest Givers. You will gain experience every time you complete and hand in Quests, which will help you to level up to the next level. You also gain experience from killing beasts and other non-player characters. The more you level up, the more powers you will gain. Access these powers by visiting a trainer. The maximum level of character in World of Warcraft is Level 80.

    Start Earning Gold
In World of Warcraft, the currency is in copper, silver and gold. You start off receiving copper when you hand in your completed Quests and you can also loot these from NPCs. Sometimes you get odd items and food you may not need so you can sell these to vendors and earn a bit more. As you level up, you will start earning silver and eventually, gold! Gold is useful for buying things you may need including gear and food to help you survive in the game. You also need this to pay trainers to level up your skills.

    Learn a Profession
To keep you even busier in the game, pick several professions. You can obtain two types of main professions from:

Tailoring - create cloth gear, bags and a magic carpet to ride.
Blacksmithing - create armor and weapons.
Engineering - create gizmos, explosives, guns, bullets, mechanic bike hog and chopper.
Leatherworking - create leather and mail armor as well as armor kits.
Enchanting - disenchant unwanted loot items and enchant your gear and weapons with spells
Alchemy - create potions and elixirs, transmute gems and metals
Jewelcrafting - create rings, necklace, trinkets and other pieces as well as prospect gems from rocks
Inscription - create glyphs and scrolls to enhance abilities
Herbalist - pick herbs used for many professions
Mining - mine ore and smelt into metal bars to be used for other professions
Skinning - skin leather from animals to be used for other professions.

You can also consider picking up secondary skills:

Cooking - cook food for general use or to gain buffs
First Aid - make bandages to be used for healing
Fishing - catch fish to be used for making food

    Do some PVP in Battlegrounds
Spice things up by joining a Battleground to fight against your opposing faction. Once you join a battleground, you will automatically be placed in a team and transported to the battleground location. You will gain experience doing battleground as well as honor points. These points can be used to buy PvP gear and weapons.

    Experience Dungeons
Enter a dungeon using the Looking for Group option and you will automatically transported to a dungeon. Here, you and your team will fight NPCs and do whatever objectives required to complete the dungeon. Bosses also drop special items that may be worth more than the usual loot.

    Collect Achievements
There are fun, interesting and challengine achievements you can do in World of Warcraft. Some achievements even reward you with special Titles or a mount you can use in the game.

Raise your Reputation in Various Factions
Apart from the main factions in World of Warcraft - Horde and Alliance, there are other factions you can join which have vendors that can only be accessed if you've raised your reputation with them. These vendors sell gear, weapons, item enhancements, recipes, mounts and other items which you may find useful for your character.

    PVP Arena
Once you reach the maximum level of 80 in World of Warcraft, you can team up with someone or a group of people and fight against other teams in the Arena. Groups that can enter the Arena are teams of 2, 3 and 5. The points you gain from the battles you win or lose in the Arena may be used for PvP gear, weapons and accessories.

    Group Raids
Raids usually involve 10 to 25+ people in the same group all fighting against NPCs and major bosses in dungeon-like locations. Except they are much harder and more challenging than regular dungeons. To be a part of a large raid group, many people form or join a Guild.

There are plenty of Activities in World of Warcraft [http://worldofwarcraft.webmixalot.com] to keep you busy and Blizzard, the creator of this game, is always adding things to make players even more interested and hooked into playing World of Warcraft.
